December 2018 Sales
Although annual light vehicle sales reached 2 million units for the second consecutive year, sales in December declined 6.4 % to 116,519 units compared to 2017. Passenger car sales dropped 6.2% to 30,957 units in December, while light truck sales fell 6.5% to 85,565 units.
Japanese brand sales in December rose 9.9% to 45,668 units. Both passenger car sales and light truck sales gained 6.7% to 13,945 units and 11.4% to 31,723 units, respectively. Sales growth leader of the month was Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada (+27.9%), followed by Toyota Canada (+25.8%), Honda Canada (+10.1%) Subaru Canada (3.1%), Nissan Canada (+1.1%) and finally Mazda Canada (-14.9%).

In 2018, Canadian light vehicle sales were 2,002,502 units, down 2.0% over 2017. For the first time in Canadian history, light trucks sales exceeded 70% of the market share in 2018. The last time the market was this dominated by a vehicle type was in 1990 where passenger cars held close to 70 %. Passenger car sales were down 9.7% to 577,711 units, while light truck sales improved 0.6% to 1,407,281 units.
JAMA Canada members’ sales as a group rose 1.9% to 733,318 units, which boosted overall market share to 36.6% compared to 35.2% in 2017. Sales growth results: Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada (+11.1% to 25,237 units), followed by Subaru Canada (+6.4% to 58,070 units), Toyota Canada (+3.2% to 231,646 units), Nissan Canada (+1.7% to 149,117 units), Mazda Canada (-0.3% to 73,869 units) and Honda Canada (-0.9% to 195,379 units).
