October 2019 – Sales

October’s new light vehicle sales softened to 160,216 units, down 0.6% compared to October last year. Passenger car sales dropped in double-digits, down 14.8% to 38,704 units, while light truck sales grew 5.0% to 121,512 units.

Japanese automakers’ sales as a group fell 1.9% to 62,356 units on mixed results. Passenger car sales decreased 16.2% to 19,037 units, while light truck sales rose 6.1% to 43,319 units. The monthly sales growth leader was Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada up 18.8%, followed by Honda Canada (+4.7%), Subaru Canada (+2.6%), Mazda Canada (+0.7%), Toyota Canada
(-4.1%), and Nissan Canada (-13.1%).

YTD: JAN – OCT

The overall market in Canada declined 3.8% to 1,661,560 units through the end of October. Passenger car sales lagged 15.6% to 430,548 units, while light truck sales rose 1.1% to 1,231,012 units, which gained market share to 74.1% from 70.5% in 2018.

JAMA Canada members combined YTD sales were reduced 2.6% to 615,821 units. However, the market share was up to 37.1% from 36.6% in 2018. Sales of passenger cars lagged 13.4% to 207,089 units, although light truck sales were up 4.0% to 408,732 units. Individually, YTD results were mixed: Toyota Canada was the growth leader (+3.9%), followed by Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada (+2.0%), Honda Canada (-2.7%), Subaru Canada (-2.8%), Nissan Canada (-8.6%) and Mazda Canada (-11.3%).
