JAMA Canada Auto Quarterly
Motor Vehicle
Statistics of Japanese Automakers in Canada and in Japan for the 3rd Quarter of 1997
CANADA
In the third quarter of 1997, Japanese vehicle production rose 5.6%,
but exports lagged 2.0%. Imports of vehicles exhibited a sharp rise from Japan, while
shipments levelled off from the U.S. compared to the year earlier. Demand for Japanese
vehicles surged in the 3rd quarter, particularly sport utility vehicles as sales jumped
almost 38% for cars and trucks combined.
(I) Production*:
Outputfrom both Honda (HCM) and Toyota (TMMC) in Canada gained 5.6% in the third
quarter, a modest gain that was tempered by lower production in August due to changeover
in production at TMMC to their new plant that officially opened in September. For the year
to date, production is up 11.9% to almost 197,000 units.
Honda in Alliston, Ontario currently makes the 3- and 4-door Civic as
well as the 4-door Acura 1.6EL. Capacity in the current plant for these two models is
160,000 units per year. The new minivan plant is expected to begin production in mid 1998
with a capacity of 120,000 units per year. At the TMMC plant in Cambridge, Toyota is
making the 4-door Corolla together with 1.8L four cylinder engines. In August 1997,
Corolla production shifted to the new plant at TMMC, where capacity is 120,000 units per
year. The first plant will be re-fitted and will produce a sporty coupe for the 1999 model
year.
(ii) Exports*:
Vehicles produced for export to the U.S. and other destinations dipped
2.0% in the third quarter primarily as a result of lower production at TMMC during the
changeover to the new plant in August. However, year to date exports are steady, up 1.5%
over the previous year to 136,000 units. Apart from the U.S., a small number of vehicles
(less than a thousand units) were shipped to Puerto Rico and Taiwan. The
export-to-production ratio rose to 72% in the third quarter from 65% in the second
quarter, but fell year over year compared to 77% in the third quarter of 1996.
(iii) Imports:
From U.S./Mexico:
Vehicle imports from NAFTA countries were relatively flat overall in the third quarter in
spite of the fact that passenger cars dropped 17.2% while light duty trucks soared 184%
compared to the 3rd quarter of 1996.
For the year to date, imports from the U.S. and Mexico were up almost
14% to 66,661 units. Passenger cars were ahead 11.1%, while light trucks jumped 30.5%.
From Japan:
Shipments of vehicles from Japan continued to expand in the 3rd quarter, lead by passenger
cars which gained 136.3% to almost 40,000 units. With higher than expected sales in Canada
for a few models that are only made in Japan, imports have risen dramatically in response
to consumer demand.
For the year to date, imports from Japan have jumped 90.0% to 97,322
units overall, including 96,693 passenger vehicles and 629 commercial vehicles. While the
increase is significant, the fact that shipments in 1996 reached a 25 year low, makes the
turnaround more dramatic.
(iv) Sales in Canada:
It is now abundantly clear that the recovery in sales of Japanese brand
vehicles in Canada has been stronger than anyone expected or forecast. Beginning in the
4th quarter of 1996, the momentum of the recovery reached a peak in the 3rd quarter.
Overall sales of JAMA Canada members climbed 37.8% in the 3rd quarter to 76,714 units. Of
this, 44,161 units were built in North America, while 32,553 units were built in Japan.
Passenger car sales were up 29.3% to 59,233 units, while light trucks soared 84.0% to
17,481 units.
For the year to date, overall sales were up 38.6% to 219,514 from
158,385 in 1996. Cars gained 28.6% to 171,199 units, and trucks accelerated ahead 91.0% to
48,315 units compared to the previous year. Overall Japanese automakers’ market share
rose to 21.2% for the first three quarters of 1997 from 18.0% last year.
